by

Leonardo Volpato

The future at the Oscars is still uncertain, but in the voting promoted by our website, “I’m Still Here” appears as one of the favorites: it is the most contemplated production in the cinema category of the F5 2024 Award. Walter Salles’ film competes for best feature film and also stands out in terms of best performance with actors Fernanda Torres and Selton Mello in the awards.

The film has been applauded in packed screenings across the country, and there is support for Fernanda Torres to be nominated for an Oscar for her performance as Eunice Paiva, a lawyer and mother of five who lost her husband, imprisoned (and murdered) by the military dictatorship.

In the same film, Selton shines as Rubens Paiva, in an equally touching performance. Ailton Graça competes for the trophy for best performance in films in 2024 for “Mussum, O Filmis”. In the work, their very similar characterization is one of the factors that draws the most attention.

Actress Maeve Jinkings, who in the film “Toll” plays a mother who suffers ridicule due to her son’s sexual orientation and enrolls him in a “gay cure” course, is yet another name that adds to the list of candidates for best cinematographic work of the year.

Silvero Pereira, in “Maniac do Parque”, delivers a beautiful performance as the psychopathic motorcycle courier Francisco de Assis Pereira, with a dark and frightening presence.

BEST MOVIES

In addition to “I’m Still Here”, another production that is also competing for the F5 Award for best film is “Minha Irmã e Eu”, by Susana Garcia, with Ingrid Guimarães and Tata Werneck as protagonists. The comedy, in January, reached the mark of 1 million spectators in cinemas, which at that time represented the first national production to reach that number in five years.

“Motel Destino”, by director Karim Aïnouz, is another project trying to win. The film stars Fábio Assunção who plays Elias, a dangerous, threatening and jealous man, owner of the motel and who is part of a love triangle fueled by sex and violence.

“Toll”, by Carolina Markowicz, and “The Hijacking of Flight 375”, by Marcus Baldini, complete the list of candidates. While the first deals with homophobia and a troubled relationship between mother and son, the second follows pilot Fernando Murilo de Lima e Silva, who in 1988 conducted a series of risky maneuvers to try to destabilize a man who wanted to hijack a Vasp commercial flight to throw it against the Palácio do Planalto.

There are, in total, 25 categories, in areas such as television, cinema, music, celebrities, internet and much more. Voting is open until December 18th. The result will be announced the following day, in a live broadcast with the participation of the website’s columnists Gabriel Vaquer, Thiago Stivaletti and Rosana Hermann. The mediation will be carried out by the deputy editor, Vitor Moreno.
