The theater company of the Broadway musical “A Wonderful World: The Louis Armstrong Musical” will lead a special effort to support those affected by the terrorist attack in New Orleans on New Year’s Day.

The musical chronicles the life and career of New Orleans-born legendary jazz musician Louis Armstrong. The company of “A Wonderful World: The Louis Armstrong Musical” launched a campaign to collect financial help. Through a QR code that will remain posted in the theater, audience members will be able to collect information and donate to the Greater New Orleans Foundation.

The shooter, Samsud Din Jaber, drove his pickup truck into the crowd on Bourbon Street in New Orleans’ French Quarter during New Year’s Eve celebrations, killing 14 people and injuring 35.

Company member Darlicia Searcy who stars as Armstrong’s wife Lucille Wilson spearheaded the initiative. “The musical asks a fundamental question: why and how did Louis Armstrong invite us to a song full of hope, love and light for life?” the actress said in a statement. “We present his life beginning in his hometown of New Orleans and the humble, exciting and troubled beginnings of his career. His hometown was where he discovered his love for jazz and went on to build an empire and status as the ‘King of Jazz,’” he said.

“No one should have to suffer as these innocent victims and their families did, so we stand in solidarity and want to support them. That’s what Louis Armstrong would have wanted,” he pointed out.

The theatrical production invites those who can to donate to the Greater New Orleans Foundation, which provides critical support to communities in need.
