How the director compares the 2nd season of the popular series to the political crisis in the country – What he reveals about the 3rd season that will be released this year
“Squid Game” series director and creator Hwang Dong-hyuk said in an interview that its new season reflects the political turmoil South Korea is currently facing.
A report by Korea JoongAng Daily reported that Hwang drew parallels between the voting scene in the recently released second season of “Squid Game” and the political divide over Yoon Suk Yeol’s ouster in South Korea, calling it an “eerie” similarity.
“I heard on the news that supporters and opponents of impeachment almost clashed and in the end, the police had to draw a dividing line between them with barricades” said the director. “It gave me chills as it was strikingly similar to the Squid Game where people are separated by a line between O and X.”
In the second season of the ‘Squid Game’ series players have to voting between O and X after each round to determine the continuation of the matches. In the first season, voting took place only once after the first Red Light, Green Light game.
“I wanted to reflect this phenomenon in history, but seeing reality gradually become more like it, I felt horror and sadness” he added, calling the current movement to oust Yoon a “critical moment.”
Huang explained that his intention with ‘Squid Game’ was “to raise the question of whether deciding everything through the majority system in a single vote is really the right approach in a country like South Korea, which operates under an imperial-style presidential system, and whether there are any different alternatives.”
Season 3 will be intense
Earlier this week, Huang in another interview revealed some new details about her third and final season of the series, which he describes as his “favorite”. “You should be prepared for something intense. It will be the strongest message yet.” he emphasized.
Hwang also dismissed the possibility of a fourth season, stressing that the third season of “Squid Game,” which is now in the final stages of production and is expected to premiere later this year, will be a final closure “in every sense of the word”.
