The illegal visit of Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan to the occupied territories sends messages of intransigence, the Cypriot Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes in a statement, condemning this visit by the head of Turkish diplomacy.
The Cypriot Foreign Ministry condemned Fidan’s illegal visit to the occupied territories, saying that “this action constitutes yet another violation of International Law, which is added to the ongoing, for 50 years, violations by Turkey against the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cypruss”.
“The Turkish Foreign Minister, with his visit, sends messages of intransigence and contempt for the decisions of the United Nations (UN) and the European Union (EU)“, reports Nicosia.
He notes that in today’s fragile international environment, whose stability is threatened by a series of challenges and volatile geopolitical realignments, adherence to UN principles and decisions cannot be selective.
The Republic of Cyprus reiterates its unwavering commitment to the effort to resume negotiations, with the aim of achieving a comprehensive solution within the agreed UN framework.
It also calls on Turkey to respond positively to this effort and to refrain from actions, which are contrary to International Law and cause tensions.
“Immediate implementation of what was agreed last October by the two leaders, and a return to a negotiation process led by the UN Secretary General within the agreed framework remains the only option» he concludes.
