Demystifying the facial cleansing routine with the help of a dermatologist

by

On the one hand, some of us use only micellaire water while others do triple cleaning with products of different textures and textures.

Trends in skincare are often contradictory. At this time, while the trend of double cleansing is giving way to triple cleansing, we are seeing more and more people turning to #skinimalism, reducing their treatment routine to a few, essential steps. In this context, we finally wonder how many steps we need. On the one hand, some of us use only micellaire water while others do triple cleaning with products of different textures and textures. But where is the golden section for each of us? We asked the dermatologist-venereologist Dr. Valia Mousatou and, with it, we demystify facial cleansing once and for all.

What is the purpose of daily cleaning?

One of the key steps in your skin care routine is daily cleansing. It is necessary for the removal of dead skin cells, air pollutants, sebum, make-up residues, and the remnants of other care products (sunscreens, creams, etc.). In addition, on clean skin we can apply makeup perfectly and facilitate the penetration of anti-aging and care products.

Do we need to wash our face morning and night?

Usually, washing morning and night is enough for most skin types. On some dry, allergic or intolerant skin, it is sufficient to clean once a day with a very gentle product so as not to irritate further.

What is your opinion about double and triple cleansing? Are they necessary? And if so, for what skin types?

Double and triple cleansing is not a necessary nor recommended procedure for all skin types. In particular, the most oily and durable skins benefit, but also those who wear intense makeup. They are mainly recommended once a day in the following way. First, remove the makeup with an oily, creamy or two-phase cleanser. Then wash your face with a cleanser rinsed with water. This removes all debris from the skin more efficiently. However, care must be taken in the choice of products so as not to strip the skin of the natural lipids of the skin that protect it.

How does our skin type affect our facial cleansing routine?

As we discussed, every skin type needs the right cleanser. Thus, the driest and most sensitive skin needs moisturizing cleansers with soothing ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid, panthenol, aloe, etc. At the same time, sometimes simply removing make-up with two-phase water or emulsion is enough. In contrast, oily skin, like adolescents and men, needs a cleanser that rinses with water, in the form of a gel or foam. Still, this is especially important after sweating. Also, acne prone skin benefits from cleansers with a mild exfoliating effect. That is why if you have acne prone skin, you can choose a product with glycolic or salicylic acid in low concentration. At the same time, when there is acne in more resistant areas, such as the back, we need cleansers with more intense exfoliating action. Here are some tips for cleansing your face:

  • When our skin “pulls” after cleansing, it needs hydration. If this sensation is intense, a milder cleanser may be needed.
  • Oily skin does not always need cream after cleansing. Often, a moisturizing serum is enough.
  • Generally, washing more than 2 times a day is not recommended because it dehydrates the skin.
  • If the cleanser has an exfoliating effect, we always use sunscreen after the morning cleansing to avoid discoloration.
