Before becoming a federal deputy and a reference in the fight for diversity, Jean Wyllys was champion of BBB 5. In a statement to “BBB: O Documentário”, the politician spoke about his experience in the reality show, in an edition marked by the fight against homophobia.
Amidst scenes in which participants gave speeches of prejudice against Jean, the politician said that he had no idea of the impact he caused until he left as champion: “That, for me, was an absolutely spontaneous thing. And after I left the home, I discovered that, in fact, the Brazilian family stopped breathing for 5 seconds. ‘What do you mean, he’s gay?'”
Today, Jean says he caused a cultural revolution in Brazil, which began to debate homophobia, from north to south. “It was the first time that there were reactions as if it were a football goal, World Cup”, said Pedro Bial, in testimony.
The politician also said that the reality show made him discuss the topic of homophobia more, becoming a reference in the fight for diversity worldwide: “BBB enhanced my activism. BBB is not mere entertainment.”
“I received 5,000 letters from people all over Brazil”, he recalled, celebrating his career on the program. “I would do it all over again. I would do everything the same,” he added.
