After winning the silver medal at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Diego Hypolito decided to retire from artistic gymnastics. In conversation with sisters Eva and Renata at BBB 25, the gymnast revealed that he faced a difficult period and felt lost.

Among other personal issues, the brother said he had problems related to alcohol consumption. “When I stopped [de competir]it felt like I wanted to live. I drank a lot and did very wrong things to myself”, he said.
“This happened over an extended period. After I understood myself, I realized that I had lost everything in my life. I lost everything”, explained the former gymnast. “During the pandemic, I stopped and thought: ‘I need to redefine myself and I want to help children'”, he stated, telling the story of the creation of the Hypolito Institute.
The entity serves around 200 children free of charge. The institution is located in the Penha neighborhood, in the north of Rio.
Diego also said that his body feels weakened due to the countless surgeries he has undergone throughout his career as an athlete. “There were 11 surgeries. I have 16 pins in my spine, two pins in my foot… There are six surgeries on my feet in total, not counting both knees and shoulders. It’s very difficult,” he commented.
