The interest of the International Associated Press was caused by the return of the bronze head of Gripas to Greece, covering the repatriation of the ancient object now on display at the Museum of Ancient Olympia.

“The New York Metropolitan Museum of Art returned the grip that had been stolen almost a century ago by a museum in southern Greece and the last repatriation marks a wider change in the museum world to return to important objects,” notes the author of the international agency.

Gripas, a mythical creature with a lion’s body and head and eagle wings, symbolized power and divine protection in ancient Greece. The bronze head is now on display next to a similar head of a grry at the Olympia Museum.

Greek Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni attended a ceremony on Friday at the Museum, describing the return as an important moment.
