“It was important for me to be true,” the philanthropist tells People, as she talks for the first time about her separation and her divorce from Bill Gates
The announcement of the separation of Melinda and Bill Gates In May 2021 it was a surprise to many, but until then, their separation was kept as a seven -sealed secret for over a year.
‘It was important for me to be true’says Melinda in an interview with “People”, adding that “He hopes that what he has to share can be useful to someone else.”
Asked about the reaction to “betrayals” in her marriage, a word she uses in her new book, ‘The Next Day’ (released on April 15) – which records some of the biggest changes in her life and what she learned from them – the philanthropist is pausing. She replies: “You must always be faithful to yourself.”
This is one of the many lessons shared in her new book, but as she points out, “He doesn’t try to give anyone’s advice.”
The end of her marriage, which they announced together with Bill almost four years ago, remains painful to be discussed. However, as he says, “It was important for me to be true.”
Although there were “difficult times” with Bill and in the past, Melinda writes in her book that at the end of 2019 she saw nightmares, with a beautiful house collapsing around her and then waking up panicked every night.
“Bill admitted publicly that he was not always loyal to me”he writes and continues referring to a “deeply annoying” article published in the fall when reports continued to grow for Bill’s previous meetings with Jeffrey Estin. Bill Gates described these meetings as a mistake and recently stated that they were ‘Foolish to spend any time with Eustin’arguing that he was looking for charity support.
Melinda writes that, in the end, her dreams were turned into a vision of herself, Bill and their three children on the edge of a cliff, as she “fell” in the vacuum. ‘As dramatic as it sounds’he wrote. “I knew, at that time, that I had to make a decision and that I should take it myself.”
Initially, she tried to remove her concerns, but when she did not work, she invited Bill with her for a trip to New Mexico in February 2020, which was initially planning to spend alone. When they arrived at home they had rented, Melinda realized something: the property was available because the couple living there had split up.
Although Melinda and Bill tried to deal with it ‘Like any other holidays’Last night, he told him that he wanted to start living separately and that he would stay at home with their youngest daughter, Phoebe, who was finishing high school. “It was one of the most frightening discussions I would have had.”he writes, and remembers that Bill was sad and upset, but also with understanding and respect.

Returning home to Seattle, they continued to work together for their World Foundation, even making joint appearances, which may have been a bit embarrassed, especially since, with the exception of a few people, no one knew what was really happening. Eventually, he decided that it was time to leave.
That summer, he told Bill that he wanted divorce and shared a long, even occasional “tender” debate. However, Melinda knew that in the coming months would be difficult. “Bill has the rumor that he is one of the toughest negotiators in the world”writes, adding that “He began to get panic attacks.”

She also mentions other panic attacks in her book: in 2006, when she thought that their son, Rory, 25 today, was ready to fall from the edge of a balloon and again around the New Year of 2014, while celebrating her 20th anniversary of her wedding with Bill in Mexico.

The process of finalizing their separation was “exhaustive” and unexpectedly time -consuming, but as soon as the deal came up, things moved quickly. They took the weekend to say it to some people near them and the next day, on May 3, 2021, they made their joint statement.
As for exactly what she pushed her to break up, her answer remained the same: this is for Bill, just to say it to the world. ‘It takes courage to forge a different life’she says to “People”, adding: “When you change trails, you realize it’s a big opening …”.
