Archaeologists estimate that the woman may have been a priest of Dimitra, which is indicated by carved jewelry and religious symbols in her statue.
New still impressive finding from Pompeii is coming to light. These are two natural size statues found intact, carved on the wall of a tomb on the Necropolis of Porta Sarno, outside the walls of the ancient city.
The quality of the carving and the archaic style date the statues – a female and a male form – in the late Roman Empire.
The unique ancient sculptures photographed and uploaded to Instagram O alfio Giannotti and immediately made the world round.

Archaeologists estimate that the woman may have been a priest of Dimitra, which is indicated by carved jewelry and religious symbols in her statue.
As for the male form by her side, scientists have not come up with his identity and role.
Although initially the two statues were considered to be depicting a married couple, experts believe that the man could also be the son of the woman or just another prominent personality of the time.

The sculptures are now maintained and will be exposed to the public since April 16, at the special exhibition “Being a Woman in Ancient Pompeii”.
