Meghan Markle, Prince Harry’s wife, revealed on Tuesday that she was diagnosed with postpartum preeclampsia after giving birth to one of her children, a medical condition she described as rare and frightening.
In the first episode of her new podcast, Confessions of A Female Founder, the Duchess of Sussex said the discovery of the condition was a “huge medical fright” she had to face without the world knowing what was going on.
The UK National Health Service (NHS) reports on its website that preeclampsia is a condition that affects some pregnant women, usually during the second half of pregnancy or soon after the birth of the baby.
First signs of preeclampsia include high blood pressure and protein in the urine. In some cases, symptoms may include severe headaches, vision problems, pain below ribs and vomiting, according to NHS.
“It’s very rare. And it’s scary,” said Meghan Markle when describing the disease. She did not tell herself the medical complication after the birth of the firstborn, Archie, five, or Lilibet, three.
“You are trying to juggle with all these things and the world doesn’t know what’s going on,” Meghan explained. “You’re trying to be present, especially for your children. But these things are great medical scares.”
Meghan’s first guest on its pODCast It was Whitney Wolfe Herd, director of the meetings platform online Bumble. In the program, the executive said she had also suffered from illness, which she described as “life or death.”
According to NHS, many cases of preeclampsia are slight, but the disease can lead to serious complications for both mother and baby if not monitored and treated.
