If you are in Volvi, visit the Geological Park with the curious rocks, which has been declared a monument of nature
At the northwestern tip of Lake Volvi, in the Prefecture of Thessaloniki, is the Nympopetra Geological Park, a park with curious rock formations, which has been declared a monument of nature.
According to Mr. Konstantinos Voudouris, a professor of geology at ERT, it is a geological formation of calcium carbonate in various impurities, known as “travertines”, due to the existence of thermometallic sources.
The travertines were formed in the waters of the lake when it was depth and extended unified in the area. It is noted that two main tectonic stages that advocated the evolution of the pelvis to its present form and formation of Koroneia and Volvi lakes took place in the Promygdonian area, as Mr Voudouris clarified.
As Mr. Victor Kamniatsos, a postgraduate student, pointed out, the shapes that appear are just the tops of those in the subsoil, and it took thousands of years to create.
The popular myths
The impressive geological formation is reminiscent of human figures, which is why the rocks are surrounded by various legends and myths.
The most popular version is that of the curse of the mother -in -law. They say that, after the marriage, the bride was punished for her greed, which emptied her mother’s home and even wanted the spindle. So, both the couple and the guests were marble.
Another version of the local folklore tradition wants the bridegroom to be a group of hunters who, while chasing prey, accidentally met a group of nymphs of the forest, bathed in the crystal clear waters of a half -naked spring.
The men stayed ecstatic watching the spectacle, and when the goddess Artemis realized them, she was so angry with their disrespect that they stabbed them to where they were standing.
The space has been properly shaped and enables the visitor to walk between the forest with the cobblestone streets, to be photographed and rest in the kiosks, enjoying the amazing goddess.
