Very close to the village of Glyki, Thesprotia, in a beautiful natural landscape with running waters, centuries -old plane trees and vertical rocks, we find the springs of the Acheron River. The springs are at an altitude of 1,600 meters in the imposing mountains of Souli, and from there the river descends through an impressive canyon, to eventually flow to the Ammoudi Preveza Ammoudi, in the Ionian Sea. The complex ecosystem of the area is protected by the Natura 2000 network. In winter the crystal clear waters of the river are quite rushing due to rainfall, but in the summer they are completely accessible and many are going there to cool. Near the springs, the water temperature is 3-4 ° C!

According to mythology, the Acheron River was of divine origin, but caused Jupiter’s anger when, during the Titanic, he gave water to the Titans to thirst. For this reason, Zeus punished him, and condemned him to stay under the earth forever, as he tanned and bitter his waters, so he is often referred to as a black man. It was also believed that the gates of the underworld were there, and Hermes the psychopath was leading the souls, so that Charos would then take them, crossing the Acheros Lake, on which the kingdom of Pluto was located. On the northeast banks of Acherus, the Necromanteion was built, where people were going to communicate with the dead, after a special rite.
On the steep slopes of the Straits of Acheron there are many species of predatory birds, such as hawracins, rhubarb, rocky rhymes, whitewashed, snakes, while in the surrounding mountain tumors they frequent hens, pounds, pounds. Mammals, such as wolves and wild boars, seek food and shelter on the wooded slopes of the canyon, along with foxes, badges, ferrets, weasel and wildcats. In the waters of the river we also find otters, while more than nine species of fish are reproduced, one of which is an endemic species of Acheron.
Going there today, you can do a series of sports and activities such as horse riding, canoeing, kayaks, hiking, and you can also eat in the graphic taverns of the area to taste local cuisine, which stands out for its excellent quality meats. A few kilometers from there, in the village of Mesopotamos Preveza, lies the historic Necromanteion of Acheron, which was one of the most famous oracles of antiquity, along with those of Dodoni and Delphi. The Necromanteion is built on the top of a verdant hill, where visitors arrived from Akrotiri Winter of the village of Ammoudia, to communicate with the souls of their loved ones. Homer in the Odyssey describes the area in the descent of Odysseus to Hades. After drying Lake Acherus in the 1950s, the area changed a radically face.
In the Necromanteion of Acheron, in order for the visitor to reach the contact with the souls of the dead, he had to make bids and get them out of oblivion, giving them blood. In the end, the faithful left another exit so as not to come into contact with the subsequent visitors, thereby securing secrecy. Any testimony of the oracle was a blasphemy, even leading to death!
Leaving the Necromanteion behind and following the course of the river, you will go to the beachfront village of Ammoudia, in the Ionian Sea. In the wider area there are impressive sea caves, as well as beautiful beaches, such as the threshing floor and the bay of Odysseus, where you can dive in the summer. The pines literally reach a breath away from the wave, while the emerald waters of the sea create a magical setting that fascinates all visitors. Whatever season, of course, if you choose to go there, the only sure thing is that you will feel the special energy of the place, and be fascinated by the beauty of the natural landscape. So here’s a destination worth adding to the 2025 bucket list!
