Chris Evans says he learned Portuguese to propose to Alba Baptista in marriage

Chris Evans, 43, said he learned Portuguese to propose to his wife, actress Alba Baptista, 27, in marriage. Known for playing Captain America in Marvel’s cinematic universe, the actor said that he even rehearsed for a week the phrase “Want to marry me?” To surprise the then bride, months before the ceremony, which took place in September 2023.

Details about the marriage proposal were revealed during the premiere of the movie “Materialists” this weekend. “Maybe I shouldn’t even be saying that, but I made the request in Portuguese. And I had practiced all week,” the actor said in an interview with The Knot.

Despite the dedicated preparation, Evans admitted, between laughs, that he was nervous on the spot and thinks he did not speak correctly. “I think I said wrong, but I still remember the sentence,” he joked. “I was so used to practicing that while I did breakfast, I almost said unintentionally aloud.”

Chris and Alba were married at an intimate ceremony in Massachusetts, United States. Discreet about personal life, the two were publicly seen in November 2022, but rumors indicated at the time they had been together since early 2021.

Alba is 27 years old, was born in Lisbon, Portugal, on July 10, 1997, and is the daughter of a Brazilian chemical engineer and a Portuguese translator, who met in Rio de Janeiro. The youngest of three brothers, she grew up in a multicultural environment and speaks five languages: Portuguese, English, French, Spanish and German.
