Luisa Mell says there is no way to fight for the environment and defend Bolsonaro

“I’ve always been involved in politics, it’s just that now people pay more attention, because everything is very polarized.” The statement was made by presenter and animal rights activist Luisa Mell, 43, who recently met with President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

If the meetings left her fans confused about her political position, Luísa explains that she has always met with various leaders to debate the causes she defends and seek improvements in the environmental spheres, and adds: “There is no way for someone who defends the environment not to be against the Bolsonaro government.

For the activist, this year’s presidential election is essential to determine the direction of the Planet and focus on sustainability. According to her, the meeting with Bolsonaro, on the arrival of Brazilians fleeing the war in Ukraine, was not planned and the president “did not exchange two words” with her, despite the fact that she was one of the people to ask for the inclusion of pets. in the rescue.

Founder of Instituto Luisa Mell, created in 2015, which works in the rescue and recovery of animals, and creator of the Planeta A project — which aims to stop the environmental disaster, the activist points out that in the 2022 elections it is important to “vote for leaders who understand the importance of the environment” and who are willing to learn about it.

Despite having been critical of Lula’s governments, between 2003 and 2011, and of Dilma Rousseff, from 2011 to 2016, now Luisa says she sees that PT “is, in recent years, understanding the importance of the environmental cause and the urgency of it”. , and sees him as a candidate who might be able to slow down ecological disaster.

“I reaffirm that [no encontro] I saw a person interested in learning, taking notes and asking. This, for me, is very important in a leader of the new world”, said the presenter, who presented programs such as Late Show and TV Fama, in the 2000s, about the meeting with Lula, which took place on the 14th, with about 20 representatives of the animal protection movement.

For Luisa, “politics is essential for transformations to take place”, so it is important that people take a stand and understand the seriousness of the environmental problem. She also emphasizes that she will continue to have meetings and debates with the most diverse leaders “who want our support and are willing to listen”.

As for the current government, Luisa points out as Bolsonaro’s responsibility what she calls the “desolating scenario of the environmental issue” and cites the deforestation in the Amazon that set a record in the recent historical series of Deter, a program of Inpe (National Institute for Space Research), with start in 2015/2016.

“We still have giant challenges, in addition to Brazil. With all the economic, social, post-pandemic problems. We cannot ignore this in these elections, these are the last years that someone will have to do something”, adds the activist, who social networks as allies in their fight on behalf of animals.

According to her, her Planet A project comes to “resume the debate and the exchange of ideas, even more with this wave of cancellation” caused by social networks, as a way to “avoid total collapse”. As part of the initiative, she hosted a dinner with personalities, on the 16th, to discuss what to do in the face of environmental problems. Bela Gil, Chico César and Klebber Toledo were some of the guests.

“What governments and billionaires are not doing, civil society will have to organize [para fazer]”, he says.
