The governor of Rio de Janeiro, Claudio Castro (PL), decreed official mourning of three days in the state due to the death of singer Preta Gil, on Sunday (20), at 50 years.

The decree was published in extra edition of the State Official Gazette.

“Symbol of representativeness in Brazilian culture, the artist’s voice echoed in important social causes, always with authenticity, leaving a legacy of joy,” says official note issued by the government.

In a social media publication, Castro said the country lost one of the most striking women of music and culture.

“More than artist, Preta was an example of strength and dignity. He bravely faced the fight against cancer, sharing his journey with the country and inspiring thousands of people with his courage and faith,” he wrote.

The governor provided solidarity with singer Gilberto Gil, father of Preta, family, friends and fans.

The artist, who died in New York, had been diagnosed with colorectal cancer in January 2023 and treated the disease ever since. She was in the United States for experimental treatment after exhausting the possibilities in Brazil.

The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes (PSD), said that he rarely met a person who brought such good vibrations and spreading joy and friendships where he arrived.

“What a sadness to see such a person to leave us! I want to manifest my deepest regret for the passage of @pretage. God can comfort the hearts of fans, the huge legion of friends, family members and especially this great guy, my friend @gilbertogil. All the strength of the world for you!”

President Lula (PT) also lamented Preta’s death and said he called Gilberto and Flora Gil shortly after receiving the news.

“Talented and struggling in everything he did – if he is an artist, whether as a businesswoman – Preta continued spreading the joy of living even in the most difficult times of his treatment,” the president wrote on his social networks.

Vice President Geraldo Alckmin said Preta was an artist who lit the life of the population, broke standards and fought against prejudice.
