Ozzy Osbourne, 76, a heavy metal icon and former Black Sabbath singer, died on Tuesday at the age of 75. Diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, the rocker had been facing health problems in recent years and said goodbye to the stage in July, at a show for a stadium crowded in his hometown, Birmingham, England.
Ozzy’s career was marked by excess and irreverence – they, the day he bit a bat’s head on stage. The episode took place over four decades ago, at a concert in Des Moines, Iowa, when a fan threw the animal on stage.
Thinking that it was a rubber toy, Ozzy put the bat in his mouth and bit his head. “I took it, put it in my mouth, chewed, bit, being the clown I am,” recalled the singer in interviews.
Despite the impact of the scene, which became one of the most legendary moments in rock history, Ozzy began to face bats with more respect over time. In 2022, according to the British newspaper Mirror, the musician installed protection boxes for animals in his UK mansion. The measure was part of a plan for preserving historical property – clased as grid II, listed heritage – before its return to the United States.
Known as “Prince of Darkness”, a nickname he embraced, Osbourne was one of the most influential rock figures in recent decades. His style, thick voice and controversial air turned him into a symbol of the genre. In addition to his solo career, he sold millions of albums and led Black Sabbath, a band that helped shape the Heavy Metal.
The singer’s family thanked the support of the fans and asked for respect for privacy at this time. “It’s more sadly than mere words can express that we have to inform that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded with love.”
