Short son of Preta Gil (1974–2025), Francisco Gil spoke on social networks on Tuesday night (22) and shared details of her mother’s latest moments of life, who died on Sunday (20). The musician, who uses the stage name Fran, paid tribute to the singer, highlighting her strength, generosity and the unconditional love she dedicated to the family, friends and the public.
“On our last night together, you slept and I would follow every breath of you. You held my hand tightly … and I don’t understand where you were taking that strength,” wrote Gilberto Gil’s grandson. “It’s been a long time since I’ve been trying to understand where your whole strength comes from … and now I understand. The engine of your life has always been love. Love has always been your greatest gift. Love, for you, has always been action – never paralysis.”
In another passage, Fran described the intensity with which the mother lived: “You were relentless loving. Your strength came from the desire to live, to see your granddaughter of Maria grow, and also came from us, who was fighting with you. From a whole country that twisted… and so fought together. This love has come to us – the most beautiful support network you built.”
The singer also talked about the generosity of his mother, who received a diagnosis of colorectal cancer in January 2023: “His compulsion was generosity. Having his love was a great impact on anyone, and I never bothered to divide him with anyone, because it was you who taught me that love is not limited,” he reminded and exalted the pride of being a black son. “You went – and always – so loved, mother. What a privilege coming to this world from you. My best friend.”
In the report, the band singer Gilsons still remembered the farewell: “I was very afraid … but determined to face everything with you. And we stared, even with you trying to save me. I said goodbye to you and tried to make you not realize … of course you realized that I did it to leave. I understood. We always understand … Just like that exactly.
In the end, Fran shared a phrase said by Gilberto Gil, Preta’s father: “His gaze also had the usual curiosity … And a lot of courage to face what was to come. And that’s how you managed to protect me and make me sure that – as always – you knew what you were doing.
The musician ended the text with a moving farewell: “Extend infinite, mother. We know that death is not an end. The photos are from this last week. The first was the last with Sol, and the second was our last photo.”
