A forgotten dimension of a famous sculpture by George Zogolopoulos is to remind the public of Thessaloniki the Momus-Museum of Contemporary Art. The iconic “umbrellas” – not the static of the new beach, but their hydrocarbon version located outside the museum, within the TIF – are preparing to… revive and resume their characteristic “choreographies”.
The full restoration of the project will be done through an extensive maintenance program, with the support of the Thessaloniki Water Supply and Sewerage Company (EYATH), in strategic cooperation with the Metropolitan Organization of Museums of Fine Arts (MOMUS).
“We will not just do a retousse and a care equal to shine the sculpture. We will improve it to work fully, because everyone – except for the older ones – have forgotten that there was a movement in it, “said Momus Manager Fani Tsatsia at the Athens/Macedonian News Agency.
George Zogolopoulos (1903-2004) was particularly interested in the coexistence of sculptures with the surrounding area, but also in the movement of static sculptural forms through the constant flow of water. The Great Steel Hydro -Hydro -Hydro -Circle called “Umbrellas” was placed at the main entrance of the then Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, during the organization of its first solo exhibition in Thessaloniki in 1993, shortly after the end of the presentation of the same work as the 45th. The study and construction was contributed by the Department of Architectural Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
The project remained at the Museum of Thessaloniki as Christidanio until 1995, when it moved to be included in a private collection, however a year later, its purchase was secured and completed, when it returned permanently to the Museum’s collections, with the contribution of the collector of Prodromos Imisis.
The forthcoming maintenance, with the work that starts immediately, involves the complete repair and upgrading of the hydrocarbon mechanism and the improvement of hydraulic systems.
In fact, the work will be done under the supervision of specialized professionals under the responsibility of the George Zongolopoulos Foundation. ‘To happen to happen, we came into contact with the Plans of the project showing exactly how pumps, tubes and pipes are combined. It is striking to see that it is not only art but there is also one science combination Behind her, “Ms Tsatsia emphasizes and estimates that these plans are more powerful than the digital representation:” I think this will be much more impressive than creating a Zogolopoulos hologram. That is, the evolution of technology, as well as engineering, did its own miracles, ”she concludes.
Work on the reopening of the hydrocarbon sculpture, which combines water movement, the harmony of the forms and the charm of the sound, will be completed in the fall of 2025.
An important partner in this initiative is the Papageorgiou Foundation, which supported the necessary preliminary stainless steel cleaning actions. Deloitte Greece and Stavros Andreadis are also supporters of the rehabilitation work.
