Traveling by train compared to plane along Europe is more expensive in 54% of cases, according to a study published by Greenpeace Europe today.

The non -governmental organization analyzed 109 cross -border trips and 33 trips to the same country. In all cases, the train route was “reasonable” possible, either during the day or during the night.

The train is up to 26 times more expensive than the plane, according to the comparisons made by Greenpeace, which cites the extreme example of a Barcelona-London route, which has been closed a month ago: 389 euros for the train for € 14.99 for the aircraft.

“It is clear that people are encouraged to take the plane to travel to Europe, even when there is an affordable rail link,” the environmental NGO points out.

France is the country where cross -border rail trips are more expensive than flights, where “95% of all routes were more expensive at least 6 in 9 days,” according to the same report.

Night trains, according to NGO, “the best choice for long -distance high -distance routes”, even if they are “generally more expensive” than low -cost flights.

Greenpeace hopes rail transport will become “systematically cheaper on all routes along Europe” and denounces the fact that kerosene is not taxed, while “railway companies are subject to energy taxes, VAT and high access to many countries”.

On the contrary, on a national scale, rail connections are less expensive than the plane for a “70% of them”, according to Greenpeace Europe.

The train is one of the means of transport with the least CO2 emissions per passenger-kilometer, as opposed to the more polluting plane.
