Then Barbara Met Alan: A film dedicated to the struggles for the rights of the disabled

by

The new movie Then Barbara Met Alan is coming to the big screen to introduce us to two great people, Barbara Lisicki and Alan Holdsworth. This is the story of two extremists who fought and protested in every possible way to restore the rights of people with disabilities in England in the 1990s.

Then Barbara Met Alan tells a true story

This is a story, however, that is not often mentioned in English history books. Comedian Barbara Lisicki and musician Alan Holdsworth met and decided they needed to change the way society treated them as disabled. The disabled in England, because of the laws and the current behavior, were often excluded from daily activities and of course faced with contempt for both the state and society.

Barbara and Alan began rallying together to demonstrate peacefully for the rights of people with disabilities. Together they even tried to stop a telemarathon, which presented the disabled as recipients of charity and not as people with their own rights. Since then, a unique story has begun, which has led England to revise their laws and recognize the rights of people with disabilities, starting with the simplest, such as equality in the workplace or cultural activities.

The cast and crew behind the film’s cameras are made up of people with disabilities
The film deals not only with the rights of the disabled in terms of script, but also in reality. Thus, many of the people who participate either as actors or as the crew to create the film, are disabled. This is a strong proof today that these people can and should have equal opportunities in every profession.

However, it is worth remembering that what Barbara and Alan achieved through their activism was not enough to completely eliminate discrimination against people with disabilities. This film is an important reminder of what we often forget and what is worth fighting for from now on.
