It is noted that in 1994, the great music composer, as Minister of Culture, created the National Cultural Network, which aimed at the decentralized development of actions and events in the region, which would have not only Panhellenic but also European scope. The creation of the network preceded a mapping of the Greek cultural space that brought to light all the relevant needs and peculiarities of each place. The Municipality of Veria, with then Mayor Yiannis Hassiotis, was one of the first cities chosen to join the cultural network.
With a good and prospects, Veria, among 415 municipalities, was excellently evaluated by Minister Thanos Mikroutsikos and was one of the 6 municipalities that joined the National Cultural Network and was immediately funded.
The funding of 1.3 billion drachmas was signed between the Municipality and the Ministry of Culture in July 1995 and concerned the creation of a closed theater building of 600 seats and a new cultural conference center (of today’s Arts Area). Thus, the necessary building infrastructure (along with the House of Letters and Arts, the Open Theater of Grove Papagou) was completed to implement the actions of the Planning Agreement.
The arts space was inaugurated with great splendor in October 1999. The contribution of Thanos Mikroutsikos, who considered him a “diamond of culture”, was decisive in its creation.
The ceremony for the naming of the site will take place on October 16th at the city’s freedom.
There will be a musical performance with Maria Papageorgiou, with songs by the top music composer. The great performer selects and presents 17 “Humility Requiem for the Future” from the discography of Thanos Mikroutsikos, with the sole criterion of her love in his work, as well as her belief that these songs concern her generation and all those who follow. Among them millennial songs such as: “Happy Song in Sylvia Plath”, “Gamography”, “The Most Beautiful Sea”, “Kurosiwo”, “Rosalouxeburg” and many more.
