A large Roman settlement, dating back to the 4th century AD, has been brought to light by archaeological research in a mountainous area near the village of Oimakli, in the Antiyaman province of southeastern Turkey.
As scattered archaeological finds were found, the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism officially began excavations, which revealed grape processing facilities, water tanks, millstones and building foundations over a total area of approximately 150 acres.
The director of the Provincial Museum, Mehmet Alkan, told Anadolu Agency that the fact that the archaeological findings are located near the historic Kahta Castle suggests that we are probably talking about a residential area during ancient times.
He emphasized that the findings bear clear characteristics of Roman architecture.

Although the walls of the buildings are built with irregular stones, their foundations are kept in excellent condition, Alkan noted.
In addition, the presence of many grape presses leads to the conclusion that the area was an important center of wine production during the Roman period.
The archaeological team is planning further investigations, in the hope that new findings and information will emerge, while an application is expected to be submitted for the official recognition of the area as a protected archaeological site.
It is worth noting that the nearby Kahta Castle, also known as Yeni Kale, was one of the most important strategic fortresses in the region and was strengthened during the Roman period as a military and administrative center.
