The “Umbrellas” have suffered significant damages and it will be necessary, along with four others that have been in the municipality’s warehouses for a long time, to travel to Athens in order to make the necessary maintenance by the managers of the Zongolopoulos Foundation.

The operation to dismantle the Umbrellas started in the morning on the beach front of the city, while the exact damage will be determined by the experts. It is estimated, however, that more serious is the situation of an Umbrella that fell last year at Christmas during severe weather.

The more damage are recorded in the “Umbrellas” they are located bottom of the sculptureas well the world is held of them to be photographed.

Also, problems were created by iron locks that some visitors hang on the sculpture, in an attempt to “lock” their love, but also from the weather conditions.

Repair work is also expected to be done on the “rains”, the metal rods present in the sculpture to resemble rain falling on umbrellas, which are dangerous for accidents. In addition, the municipality of Thessaloniki is planning a good cleaning to make them shine like new again.

The work of Giorgos Zongolopoulos is 13 meters high and is located on the pavement of Nea Paralia. It is a visual composition made of stainless steel, which has been a separate point of reference for the city since 1997, when it was installed, on the occasion of the title of European Capital of Culture.

With the restoration of the beach front and the transfer of the “Umbrellas” from the height of the Naval Club to the specially designed wooden platform, near the statue of Alexander the Great, the sculpture stood out even more and has become one of the most loved by the people of Thessalonica as well as by all tourists.
