Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announced on Wednesday that his country’s armed forces intercepted three drug-trafficking planes “coming from the north” and the Caribbean in the previous three days.

“The day before yesterday, an aircraft used for drug trafficking came in (s.s. in Venezuelan airspace) from the Caribbean. Our Air Force spotted it in a second,” Maduro said during a televised event. “Today (as of yesterday Wednesday), two aircraft used for drug trafficking entered from the north. And as our legislation provides, the interception procedure was followed…”he added.

Maduro’s announcement of intercepting aircraft came at a time when the US have developed military power in the Caribbean which launches attacks against vessels allegedly belonging to drug cartels.

Washington accuses Maduro of being a member of a cartel, which the Venezuelan president vehemently denies, saying he is conducting operations aimed at combating drug trafficking.
