The hospital of Leros, which also serves several neighboring islands, presents massive shortages of medical personnel that endanger the health of patients. The Municipality of Leros asks the Ministry of Health to provide financial incentives to critical medical specialties so that they are covered. In fact, as a last resort, he is determined to cover the costs. Positive news for the hospital is the donation of 115,000 euros from a Turkish businessman for the purchase of equipment for the hospital’s operating room.
Across from Nisyro there is a small island the Glass – an island with volcanic soil, white sand and turquoise waters. There, every day before dawn, dozens of workers start from Nisyros to work in one of the few pumice mines in Europe. An island that, although it no longer has permanent residents, has workers giving it life… The report of the show reveals the “secret pumice island”.

A simple indisposition almost cost Anna from Nisyros her life, who was faced with time, but also the shortcomings of the islands’ health system. It took nine whole hours to transfer him from the clinic in Nisyros to the hospital in Kos, in order to be operated on. The transfer took place at 5 in the morning from the boat that transports the workers to Gyali and when she arrived in Kos, another unpleasant surprise awaited her, as the ambulance that picked her up was “sloppy” and made intermediate stops, prolonging her agony and pain. As she says, she owes her life to the island’s young rural doctor and still distrusts the health system on the small islands.
