Every October, during Halloween (and beyond) millions of people pay dearly to have a terrifying experience from beyond.
“Haunted” hotels are overbooked and tours of ghost and “lost soul” sites are boosting tourism by double digits. According to a general consensus (and poll) of travelers and paranormal funs, there are 5 places around the world that are considered the darkest… in the whole world.
1. Salem
According to research by website SpinBlitz – which analyzed data and visitor reviews from various travel sources such as Lonely Planet, Trip.com and Condé Nast Traveler – the world’s most haunted destination is in America and it is none other than Salem, Massachusetts.
The town, famous for the Witch Trials of 1692, has learned to make a living from its dark history. Every October, more than a million visitors flood the narrow streets to experience the chilling aura of ghosts and haunted souls.

Salem’s House of Witches and Memorial to its Own Witches is packed with visitors and the city has been named the world’s most haunted destination, rated 4.9 out of 5 on the “haunting scale”.
2. Corvin Castle, Romania

Corwin Castle looks like a place literally designed to house ghosts. The Gothic fortress in Hunedoara once housed Count Vlad Tsepes the Renovator (Paloukoti) and locals say his spirit never left.
According to SpinBlitz, “it sees a sharp increase in visits every October as Dracula fans and ghost hunters alike flock to his dungeons.”
Tourists claim to feel cold drafts of air in sealed chambers and hear voices in rooms where no one is present.
Haunting Rating: 4.9/5
3. Lizzie Borden’s House, Fall River, Massachusetts

Inside this house, on August 4, 1892, Andrew and Abby Borden were found dead, murdered with an axe.
The family’s daughter, Lizzie Borden, was acquitted, while the real perpetrator was never found.
Centuries later, every October, the “murder room” closes months early. Overnight guests claim to hear footsteps on the stairs and sounds of axes in the distance.
Haunting Rating: 4.8/5
4. Hill of Crosses, Lithuania

The Hill of Crosses in Lithuania is home to more than 200,000 crosses and rosaries left by pilgrims over the past two centuries.
During the day, it gives the feeling of a sanctuary. But at night, locals report strange lights piercing the crosses and faint voices carried by the wind.
The sight is both beautiful and terrifying.
Haunting Rating: 4.7/5
5. Eastern State Foundation, Philadelphia, USA

Once one of the toughest prisons in America, its ramshackle cells now host ghost tours and haunting horror stories.
Staff and visitors say they see strange figures in old guard towers and swear they’ve heard cell doors slam shut when no one is around.

Haunting Rating: 4.6/5
5+1. Tower of London, England

A millennium of beheadings and betrayals is bound to give rise to some ghosts – most famously those of the Headless Knights, Anne Boleyn (second wife of Henry VIII who was beheaded for adultery) and Guy Fawkes who was tortured to death after taking part in the Gunpowder Plot in 1605 to assassinate him King James A.
With three million visitors a year and over 200 recorded ghost sightings, the Tower of London is tied for 5th place, along with the haunted Eastern State Penitentiary
