Before she was Dita Von Teese that we know, there was the Heather Renee Sweeta Michigan girl who grew up enchanted by the golden age of Hollywood. Little Heather spent hours watching old movies and imitating the glamor of Rita Hayworth and Betty Grable.

Growing up, she began collecting vintage clothing and corsets while working in lingerie boutiques. There she discovered the allure of old-school glamour, a passion that would become the heart of her artistic identity. When she entered the burlesque scene in the late 90s, Heather became Dita. And Dita became… a legend.

“I had just seen a film starring the German actress Dita Parlo and thought of using her first name. A few years later, Playboy told me I needed a last name. I looked in the phone book and dialed Von Treese. There was a typo in the magazine and the last name appeared as Von Teese. I called them and they said they would fix it next month, but they never did.”she said in an interview with the “Sunday Times”.

In an era where sensuality was synonymous with excess, Dita Von Teese returned to her roots – to theatrics, to the play of the imagination, to the seduction that implies without revealing.

With performances that looked more like theater than dance, she turned burlesque into a stage experience of high aesthetics. Her iconic ‘Martini Glass Show’, where she bathes in a giant martini glass, became an icon of modern burlesque and emulated around the world. “Burlesque is not for the naked. It’s for the imagination”he explains. “It’s about being able to control the gaze that’s on you.” The artist will present her new show, “Nocturnal”in Scotland, next year.

And it’s true that Dita Von Teese is a work of art in motion. With her porcelain skin, crimson lips and black waves in her hair, she looks like she’s stepped out of a 1950s pin-up diary page. Yet she’s more contemporary than ever.

She collaborated with Jean Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood, Christian Louboutin and Moschino, while her appearances at fashion weeks are always one of the highlights. She also designed her own lingerie collection, Dita Von Teese Lingerie, giving women the opportunity to embrace their femininity in a sophisticated and sensual way. “I don’t dress to impress others. I dress to feel beautiful myself”she has said in many interviews.

After their divorce, Dita came back stronger than ever, proving that her true love was always her art. Apart from burlesque, he has written books such as “Your Beauty Mark” and “Burlesque and the Art of the Tees”through which she shares her secrets for style, confidence and personal expression.

Today, Dita Von Teese continues to travel the world, bringing to the stage the promise of an old, almost forgotten dream: that beauty is timeless and sensuality can be art.
