On the occasion of International Monuments Day and Sites (18/4), with the special theme of this year’s celebration “Cultural Heritage and Climate Change”, and in the context of the 11th International Archaeological Film Festival “AGON” (10-16 / 5/2022), the Cultural Foundation of Piraeus Group ( PIOP), in collaboration with the Urban Non-Profit Culture Company Odyssey, organize the screening of two award-winning archeological documentaries, on Thursday, April 14 (starting time 18:00), at the PIOP Historical Archive.
These are documentaries “The layer of destruction” (Greece, 1980, 32 ‘), directed by Costas Vrettakou, and “Couple: the last days” (France, 2000, 52 ‘), directed by Thierry Ragobert. The films will be prefaced by the president and artistic director of AGONA, Memi Spyratou.

A few words about documentaries
“The layer of destruction”
The need for water supply of Athens becomes the layer of the destruction of the important in size and findings of ancient Gallipoli that sank from the waters of the artificial lake of Mornos in the late 70’s. Costas Vrettakos, takes the genre of archaeological documentary to the next level, recording with his lens the excavation and at the same time the sinking of the ancient city. The documentary has received the 1st Prize for Short Film at the 21st Thessaloniki Film Festival (1980), the Short Documentary Award (PEKK) and the 1st Prize for the Balkan Film Festival. It comes from the archive of the Greek Film Archive and the screening is carried out with the kind permission of Mrs. Tina Petrounia – Vrettakou.
“Couple: the last days”
The construction of a dam on the Euphrates, in Turkey, will destroy one of the most important cities of the Roman Empire. In July 2000, the ancient city of Zeugma will be covered by 40 meters of water. An interdisciplinary team of experts is recruited, consisting of archaeologists, epigraphists and ceramologists, and a road race begins to preserve the remnants of many centuries of Mesopotamian history, using the most spectacular technical means. The film follows the work of archaeologists and at the same time tells the story of this iconic city that was founded on the Silk Road, by a general of Alexander the Great.
The documentary has received the Director Award and the Grand Prix of the Jury of the International GAME Festival in 2002.
The 11th International Archaeological Film Festival “AGON” is under the auspices of SA of the President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou, as well as under the auspices of SA of the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Anastasiadis.
