Ola Rotimi was born in 1938 and grew up in a family of artists. His mother was the manager of a traditional dance troupe and his father was in the community theater. His father was also a director and producer on the play that Rotimi first took to the stage at the age of just four. His family’s passion for art, as well as his mixed background, his mother’s Itzab and his father Yoruba, had a decisive influence on his future work. He studied theater at Boston University and received a degree in theatrical and dramatic literature from Yale University.
He has written and directed dozens of plays and short stories based on the national traditions and history of Nigeria. They showed off their traditional Nigerian ceremonies, songs and dances all over the world. Some of his most famous and award-winning works are: “The Gods Are Not to Blame”, “Our Husband Has Gone Mad Again” and “Kurunmi”.
