The art gallery Rebecca Kamchi presents for the first time paintings and drawings by Alexandros Georgios entitled “Prince with a blue crown meets the family in his body”.
The exhibition includes oil paintings on canvas and drawings that the artist created in New York and Athens from 2017 until today. The works represent a colorful world, in which creatures roam, inhabit, and are associated enigmatically, sometimes anthropomorphically and sometimes not, seeming to come from the realm of the unconscious.
Georgiou is best known for his travel projects in Iran and India, where known and unknown recipients received by mail the works he made while traveling – mostly handmade cards and painted black-and-white photocopies of photographs he took. Since the birth of his son in 2017, travel projects have given way to painting – a continuation of his friction with the middle in the first years of his career, which remains less known.
The title is borrowed from a work in the exhibition and is reminiscent of a fairy tale. The prince is a child, his crown is blue and he meets the family in his body, something that could happen in a dream. Maybe he is cut off from her and meets her in his body as pain of absence.
Georgiou is best known for his travelogues from Iran and India. As he travels, the artist makes handmade cards and paints black and white photocopies of his photographs of the places he visits and then posts them to known and unknown recipients, thus creating a conversation and a sense of experience and time.
George’s journey to distant parts of the planet is now transformed by painting into an inner journey into the depths of the self. There he meets and from there he draws to transfer to his painting, characters who belong to a world of mystery, magic, joy and sorrow.
