Do you suffer from FOMO? – What is inactivity syndrome and how to deal with it

by

Overconsumption as a term could take us tens of thousands of years back, perhaps since man first appeared.

Nowadays, of course, over-consumption seems to have acquired status, prestige and a huge collection of reasons that have “normalized” it behind concepts such as social prestige, professional success and “labels” such as tycoon, self-employed professional and the like. On the other hand, a consequence of consumerism is of course the fear of inaction also known as FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out).

In short, we talk about the guilt that one may feel when one observes what the other person is doing in terms of activities, opportunities and circumstances and enters the process of comparison with the feeling of inadequacy to “ignite” inside. When one enters the process of comparison then it is that one actually exceeds the limits and feels “a little” in front of anyone else who in his opinion can have a more “interesting” life.

In short, the fear of inaction makes a person feel that opportunities are lost in front of him while each time the feeling is nourished and strengthened more and more.

The fear of inaction does not allow man to think logically and ultimately act accordingly as it keeps him “captive” in the thought that he is simply not capable of seizing the opportunities that may be presented to him and rests on his laurels and in such a way thinking with inaction enveloping him.

Here are 5 different ways to deal with the fear of inaction:

1. Relax. But really.

Whatever it means, try to relax in bed, on the couch, with your chihuahua, with a good book, or even with friends. Do not hesitate to relax feeling that you are left behind in something else. Do you really think it will matter in the future?

2. Accept the fact that you can not have it all

You are neither superheroes nor made to become. You are people with feelings, fatigue, relaxation and everything that composes your human condition. You can not do it or have it all just to feel “full” because this feeling fades as easily as when you buy new shoes and your excitement “passes” in 24 hours.

3. Say “thank you” to yourself and enjoy it

It sounds complex but wake up one morning and go for a walk, a leisurely walk without any goal, without being to lose those unnecessary fats or to be fit or for anything else. Forget your personal goals for a while and focus on enjoying a nice walk with good company, maybe breakfast on the balcony or in the yard, something just for you and yourself. There is a fine line between egocentrism and self-love.

4. Start doing a little more what you love

Time management nowadays sounds rather utopian even as a reference. Of course, on the other hand it is very important to start investing in yourself which automatically means engaging in activities that you really love. Whether it’s reading romance or football, fitness, mystery movies, photo editing, reading, foreign languages, music and so on, go and cry not just saying why the list is so bottomless, just do it and do it and more and better than last time. Invest in yourself because you are basically the only one who will decide how such an investment will develop.

5. Live
Do not take this advice as tip number five. We are not playing with numbers here anyway. In this … fifth point, all the above are included, as a patchwork of ideas, and are transformed into action. Experience whatever that means to you. And this so that you never get the suspicion in the future that you may not have lived as long as you should, but you just existed from time to time. He will be the repulsed one who may “eat” your thought. Live as best you can and what that means for you. You may remember these lines along the way.

This insidious situation of FOMO “traps” us in a reality that does not actually exist and worries us about things that are not in our sphere of control and all this without reason and without cause. If you feel that it “gnaws” your daily life and most likely your thinking, follow some of the tips but before you make sure that you want to stop it. Because otherwise the hole in the water will be too “small” as an expression to capture reality.
