Sinsee Ho’s timely photo prevailed over the remaining 59 finalist photos, which were selected from more than 47,000 submitted. Ho took her photo, entitled “Lockdown but Not Disconnected”, in Malaysia, during the Chinese Lunar Year 2021. Although this day is typically characterized by large festive gatherings, Ho wanted to show how dramatically the world had changed. “I put my husband in a red shirt and a traditional Chinese hat with a plait to reflect the festive mood of the Lunar New Year, while I showed a more relaxed mood as if I had just gotten out of bed,” said Sinsee Ho.
Winners also emerged in six categories: Natural World, People, Travel, American Experience, Altered Images and Mobile. The subjects ranged from Matjaz Krivic’s tender look at the human-animal relationship with “Najin Resting With Her Caretaker” to Prathamesh Ghadekar’s charming look at the symbiotic relationship between two types of insects in “Ants and the Aphids”.
More than 13,000 readers of the magazine voted for the Readers’ Choice Award, which was won by Shayna Stevens with the photo “Teach Me Dad” she took on her own farm: Stevens’s husband shows their two-year-old son the inside bucket with fresh milk that has just been milked.
