by

The magic of temples in Venice is captured in his photographic project “100 Churches of Venice and the Lagoon” by Alejandro Merizalde, a photographer from Ecuador based in New York.

Venice is one of the most photographed cities in the world and is also the subject of many works of art and literature.

In the album “100 Churches of Venice and the Lagoon”, the photographer who has been working in Venice since 2008, visits the city every winter, captures the many places of worship in Venice, most of which are catholic churches, but also two synagogues and an Anglican temple.

The book highlights the enormous architectural diversity of the churches in Venice, some imposingly classic, with Corinthian columns covered by sculptures of Saints, others with arched Venetian Renaissance windows, and others more simply looking like arsenals or houses.

The photographer has included photographs of churches from Venice and the islands surrounding the Venetian lagoon, Murano, Burano and Torcello, Pelestrina, the town of Cioza and small communities.

Many churches have the “Omnipotent Eye” symbol on the top of their facades, as well as rosettes, circles and round windows.

Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari the largest church in Venice, one of the three surviving Gothic style in the city, the church of St. Nicholas of Tolentino, the churches of St. Mary of Miracoli, Mary Magdalene, St. Barnabas are among those on display in the book.

Marina Gasparini Lagrange’s essay, included in the album, provides a description that combines her personal experience as a former resident of Venice with her perspective as a historian and intellectual.
