The Easter outing and the extroverted spring mood do not leave much room for the distribution offices and the hall owners, who are now hoping at the opening of summer cinemas from the beginning of May. Thus, the miserable winter, which tested the endurance of the cinematic circuit, with historical cinemas being locked or closed until recently and the tickets breaking one negative record after another, comes to an end with only three new films, from which are distinguished by the violent adventure “The Man from the North” by Robert Eggers. Also shown are the indifferent “Our Lady of Paris is on Fire” by Jean-Jacques Ano and “Three Wishes for Cinderella”, which is addressed mainly to children.
Man from the North (“The Northman”), an American-produced 2022 adventure film directed by Robert Eggers and starring Alexander Skarsgρrd, Ania Taylor-Joy, Nicole Kidman, Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, Bjork, and Clay.
The promising director of “Lighthouse” Robert Eggerstravels us to the icy north and in the Viking Agedelivering a fascinating as well as blood-stained revenge story, with his own characteristic perspective on “Hamlet”, but also his familiar dark directing style and having at his disposal a multi-faceted cast.
For 140 minutes, Egers constantly presses the accelerator of the adventure, agony and bloodshed, highlighting at the same time the magic of icy landscapes and mysticism, the hellish thoughts that torment the heroes. Filmed in the dim light, the grayish-blue stifling environment of the north, intertwined with the wildness of its subject, will create the framework for a brutal adventure, with abominable -sometimes unnecessary- massacres, behind which hides an allegorical mood, but which obscures an allegorical mood. from the complex narration of Egers and the entanglement of different literary and historical narratives, which in combination with the stormy action, does not leave time for the viewer to analyze, to digest, what he sees.
The hero, a formidable warrior, saw his father’s father beheaded by his uncle, who also kidnapped his mother. Twenty years later, a witch will remind him of the sacred oath of revenge, but also of the salvation of his mother.
The famous story of William Shakespeare adapted to take the form of a blood-soaked adventure, but the film also has its vulnerabilities, beyond the subject of narrative. Especially when the mythology and epic character of the Vikings meets the blurred existential anxieties of the hero, when his barbaric, almost terrifying appearance, an excess of testosterone must crack from his deepest inner feelings, like a marble peeling in the first rain. At the same time, it is obvious that the director should use a little more editing scissors, as he left unnecessary sequences that do not offer anything special, not even the necessary breath that the viewer needs in front of the stormy action.
Nevertheless remains a remarkable -very violent- satisfying adventurewhich sometimes “boils” in contrast to the icy environment that takes place.
Alexander Skarsgρrd, suitable for the role, is emotionally impenetrable like a stone, while from the rest of the remarkable cast stands out the reappearance of Bjorg, the elf of the Icelandic music scene, who is incredibly attached to Viking mythology.
IN A FEW WORDS… A very young prince is on the verge of becoming a man. As he prepares to sit on his father’s throne, his fate is indelibly sealed by a bloody and unnecessary slaughter: his father is brutally murdered by his uncle, who even kidnaps the little boy’s mother. Leaving the Kingdom of the island by boat, the child vows revenge. Two decades later, the hero has become a fearless warrior who invades villages and plunders them, until an eerie fortune teller reminds him of his eternal oath that he must avenge the unjust loss of his father, save his mother, and to kill his greedy uncle. Traveling on a ship transporting slaves to Iceland, the hero infiltrates his uncle’s farm with the help of a woman who was with him on the ship – and thus begins the struggle to honor his sacred oath.
Notre-Dame Brûle (Notre-Dame Brûle)
Dramatic adventureFrench-Italian production of 2022, directed by Jean-Jacques Ano, with Samuel Lampart, Jean-Paul Bord, Chloe Juan, Pierre Lauten, Ann Indalgo and others.
When we watched in amazement, in a live broadcast, three years ago fire that broke out in the emblematic cathedral of Paris, one of the most recognizable monuments in Paris, for many the next thought was when we will see the unexpected event on the big screen. Well, this time has come in record time and by the hand of the veteran director Jean-Jacques Ano (“The Name of Rhodes”, “The Bear”) for whom we thought he had retired, as he had been missing for twelve years, while he had some success from the 2001 film “The Enemy at the Gates”.
Here, Ano, who of course has not forgotten his art, although the years of his prosperity belong to the distant past, has to face two inherent problems. The first concerns the fact that we know the story and its end and the second, the short time distance from the event, which is still on the upper shelves of memory. So, what is left are some details, the battle of the heroic firefighters with the flames and of course the anxiety about whether they will come out of the Gothic style temple safe. An imposing church, glorified by Victor Hugo with his classic novel of the same name “Our Lady of Paris” and which we saw taken to the big screen six times, with the best being that of 1939, of Ditterle, with the shocking Charles Lawton as Quasimodo and Maureen O’Hara as the fiery Esmeralda.
Many years have passed since then, the temple was turned into a tourist attraction, mainly for its architectural peculiarity and the decade before the fire had maintenance problems, as the state subsidy was insufficient. At the same time, there were many fires in other smaller churches throughout France, while there was also the widespread phenomenon of conceding churches for commercial use!
Thus, we reached 2019 when during the restoration and maintenance of the temple and the fire broke out, which resulted in the collapse of the wooden roof and its central spit, as well as significant damage to other parts.
All this will be left out of Ano’s film, which will be limited to the heroic effort of the firefighters, while the only trump card of the film is the remarkable connection of the archival material from the facts with the fictional scenes that he shot. A film production that could be described as the film that was shot under the auspices and approval of the official French state…
The nice performances of the actors are expected to be appreciated mainly by the students of the French Institute …
IN A FEW WORDS… Paris April 15, 2019: The most important metropolitan Christian church in the world, the glorious Notre Dame de Paris, is burning. Its roof is collapsing and the efforts to put out the fire are literally heroic.
