Why is your diet important, the hours you work?

by

For those of you who spend most of the day sitting at a desk, with no physical activity other than getting up for a glass of water, fatigue at 6 p.m. that you feel is very logical.

But why does our work make us feel so physically exhausted? Is it a lack of physical movement? Possibly. But it could also be due to the fact that hard mental work exhausts the body just as much as physical exercise.

How much energy does your brain need when you work out?

Physical activity whets the appetite because every muscle we move requires energy and produces metabolic processes that also require energy. When we do physical activity or work, our body expends energy on the movement of our muscles but also on the increased heart rate and respiration required when we exercise.

However, it is not only the muscles that work visibly that require energy, but also the thinking of the brain. Energy in the body is in the form of calories and every cell needs energy to do its job. As this energy is consumed, he consumes more energy for his next job.

Thus, the time you spend focusing on your work, stress or just doing mental work for a long time, requires more energy than you think. All the sources say that your brain is actually the “hungriest” organ. It is only 2% of your body mass, but uses 20% of your energy.

How to feed a hungry brain?

What is very important is to feed your brain with all the right nutrients daily, so that you can better manage stress without exhausting your brain. As the brain, like all organs in the body, relies on glucose, carbohydrates are vital to its supply. But also brain-friendly foods, such as:

• Fatty fish

• Berries

• Green leafy vegetables

• Eggs

• Nuts

These high-fat foods are extremely important, as 60% of our brain is fat and about 25% of it is an omega-3 fatty acid called DHA, which is commonly found in fish or seaweed oils. When we do not eat enough fatty fish or take algae oil supplements, our brain can not cope as well with daily stress and pressure and we are likely to run out faster.

What we can say for sure today is that we are all less or not at all interested in eating food during intense mental work. However, food and proper eating habits are equally important before and after work, to cope with the stress of work.

Therefore, if not on a daily basis, at least when you are quite stressed and stressed at work, I would suggest you prepare your snacks and meals from the previous day, in order to cope mentally and physically.
