Singer Anitta, 28, paid tribute to Marília Mendonça (1995–2021) during the Latin Grammy awards this Thursday (18), and thrilled fans around the world. The artist tragically died in a plane crash on November 5th at the age of 26.
On her Instagram, Anitta thanked the Grammys for the opportunity to talk about the singer and pay tribute to her. “Thank you for letting me pay this solemn tribute to our Queen of Brazil,” she wrote.
On social networks, internet users celebrated the tribute. “Yes, it was beautiful Anitta. Homage more than deserved to our eternal Queen”, wrote one. “Thank you Anitta for representing us. Beautiful tribute”, thanked another.
“The weight of the homage to Marília Mendonça at the Latin Grammy is essential to highlight even more the size of the loss we had for national music”, pointed out a third. “Congratulations on the attitude Anitta!” wrote another.
During the tribute, Anitta began by saying that “just now we lost a great artist from my country: Marília Mendonça. From a very young age, she became one of the most beloved singer-songwriters in Brazil.”
“Marília, together with Maiara and Maraísa, was nominated for this night. It hurts my heart that she isn’t here,” continued the artist. The trio of singers competed in the category of Best Sertanejo Album for “Patroas”.
“Everyone who knows you knows that you were a generous woman and friend to everyone. We will remember you today, tomorrow and always. Viva Marília Mendonça”, completed Anitta. Although the album “Patroas” did not win the award, Marília was not forgotten and the director of the Latin Grammy, Manuel Abud, dedicated the award to the singer.
