Birmingham: They lost their cat on their honeymoon and found it after 10 years

by

A couple reunited with their cat 10 years after they disappeared from their boat.

The cat named Big Ginge was last seen by owners Colin Clayton and Eva Bellamy in 2011 while on a honeymoon near Fradley Junction – 25 miles from their home in Birmingham.

Despite the fact that he usually jumped and got off the boat, he disappeared and the couple registered him as missing.

They were shocked when they received a call saying that he had been found in Staffordshire.

The couple’s three cats, Weasel and her offspring Diesel and Big Ginge, who were three at the time, were used to living in the canal and coming and going from the boat.

Mr Clayton said “there was never a problem” with the cats finding their way home and then the other two cats returned without Big Ginge.

The couple stayed another five days searching before registering him as missing on their microchip.

Earlier this year, Cats Protection reported that the team was informed of a stray in Lichfield, which they named Marmalade.

Sue Hocknell from the organization said: “Over time a local fed him and gradually Marmalade began to trust him.

“Then I got a call to say that Marmalade had entered his apartment and that he had a lump on his side.

“I managed to get a quick appointment at the vet and that was when we discovered his real identity.”

Big Ginge is now back in his original home, but a mystery surrounds what he was in the last decade.

Clayton added: “For now we will keep him indoors.

“Big Ginge has had a lot of stress in his life and we are sure that everything will go well.”
