The Museum is dedicated to the internationally renowned Greek artist Konstantinos Xenakis, who donated 171 works of all periods to the Municipality of Serres, envisioning the creation of a unique Museum of its kind in the city of Serres. Also, 13 works of the artist were donated to the Municipality by the professor of AUTh. Aristotelis Naniopoulos, while a smaller number of other donors.

The vision of the pioneering artist became a reality after systematic and long-term efforts of the Municipal Authorities of the Municipality of Serres as well as the local civil society and the Association of Serrai Politia with the coordination of Professor A. Naniopoulos.

The Museum of Contemporary Art “Konstantinos Xenakis Gallery” was created in the framework of the Cultural Dipole project “Creation of a cultural dipole in the cross-border area” of the INTERREG VA program “Greece – Bulgaria 2014-2020”.

It is noted that the other cultural pole, created as part of this project, the History Museum in Petrich, Bulgaria, opens on Wednesday 18 May.

The project started in September 2017 and is completed with the inauguration of the two Museums having successfully gone through the difficult period of the pandemic.
The main partner of the Cultural Dipole project is the Municipality of Serres and the Municipality of Petrich of Bulgaria, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) and the Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH) participate, while the supporting partners are the associations of Serrai. State and Ε.Μ.Ε.Ι.Σ.

The Municipality of Serres succeeded through Cultural Dipole as well as with its own resources and the support of individuals to transform a listed building on the site of the former Papaloukas camp, now Konstantinos Karamanlis Culture Park into a modern museum space worthy of the collection of Konstantinos Xenakis.

“With the operation of the Museum of Contemporary Art” Konstantinos Xenakis Gallery “, Serres acquires a new landmark, which is a reference point for modern Greek culture and an important destination for the art-loving public”, emphasizes the Mayor of Serres Alexandros Chrysafis.

In the Museum one can browse the evolution of the work of the pioneering visual artist, who passed away on June 6, 2020 and throughout his artistic career, with the use and utilization of modern technological means and audiovisual material.

The organization of the exhibition space took place after a complete Museological-Museographic-Graphic design study of the emeritus professors of AUTh, Matoulas Skaltsa, Panos Tzonos and their collaborators. Besides, Konstantinos Xenakis himself actively participated in the first phases of study and implementation of the Museum.

The new Museum is almost zero energy with the use of geothermal for heating and cooling and friendly for people with disabilities with special provisions for physical and perceptual accessibility, such as tactile exhibits, audio access to texts via QR codes, videos with subtitles and Greek sign language , ramps, accessible toilet.
