Favorite action «Sundays in Athens » returns in May to the museums and cultural sites of the Municipality of Athens to celebrate International Museum Day (IHM) which is celebrated every year on May 18.
On Sunday, May 22, the museums celebrate and invite families with children to a series of exciting creative learning activities, with free participation in the premises of the Organization of Culture, Sports and Youth of the Municipality of Athens (OPANDA) and the Technopolis Industrial Gas Museum.
Museums can transform the world. By presenting the past, new horizons open up to create a better future. Thus, the theme chosen this year by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) is “The Power of Museums”, in an effort to highlight the power of museums as agents of social change and sustainable development.
In this context, the eight venues that will open their doors on Sunday, May 22 have planned their actions with inspiration for the theme of this year’s International Museum Day and so the participants are invited to take part in incredible educational programs, imaginative art workshops and prototypes. creative games, discovering museum collections in the most fun way.

How many stories are hidden in a museum? What did the old gas plant have to do with refugees from Asia Minor? Guided by an original map, the little friends of the Museum will tour and explore the old gas factory that provided light and energy throughout Athens for more than 120 years. They will hear how many stories are hidden in it and will discover through unique games what its “hidden” power is … The educational program is based on the oral testimony exhibition “I remember ’22” held for the 100th anniversary of Asia Minor Catastrophe, in the context of the educational program of the Municipality of Athens “The child, the city and the monuments”.
