The first suspected case of possible infection by Smallpox of monkeys was found in our country and is being examined.
This is an English tourist who together with his companion, asymptomatic, were transported from Kefalonia to the Attica hospital in order to be treated in negative pressure rooms.
THE ΕΟΔΥ received samples for confirmatory testing which were sent to the reference laboratory and the results will be available on Monday.
First case in Switzerland and Israel
It was noted first case in Switzerlandwho is infected through “close physical contact abroad”, said in a statement.
This person consulted a doctor because he had developed a fever, rash and felt bad, announced the canton and added that he has been isolated in his home and the disease is progressing in a mild way.
Also, Israel announced the first case smallpox, a disease commonly found in West Africa.
He is a 30-year-old man who recently returned from a trip to Western Europe, a spokesman for Isilov Hospital in Tel Aviv said. According to the Ministry of Health, this man, who shows only slight symptoms, had come in contact with a patient abroad.
Cases have been reported so far in many western countries, such as France, Britain, Spain, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the USA.
THE World Health Organisation is expected to give new instructions to countries in the coming days on how to reduce the spread of the disease, said David Hayman, head of the Strategic and Technical Advisory Group on Pandemic and Epidemic Risk Infectious Diseases (STAGs).
Hayman said monkey pox did not look like the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic because it was not as easily transmitted. Those who suspect they may have been exposed to the virus or those who experience symptoms such as rash and fever should avoid close contact with other people. “Vaccines are available but the most important message is that you can protect yourself,” he added.
