Amid the rise in Covid-19 cases in recent weeks, cities in São Paulo have once again recommended the use of masks in schools. This is the case of Santo André, São Bernardo do Campo and São Caetano do Sul.
Poá, also located in Greater São Paulo, includes, since March, educational institutions as one of the places where protective equipment is mandatory, as well as public transport and health facilities.
Considered essential to prevent the transmission of Covid-19, the mask was no longer mandatory in closed spaces by the then governor of the state of São Paulo João Doria (PSDB) on March 17.
Despite the new recommendations in these cities, the situation in the state is not alarming. This Wednesday (25), São Paulo recorded 6,586 new cases of coronavirus, that is, a seven-day moving average of 2,239 cases per day, which represents a drop of 43% compared to the data of two weeks ago.
The average number of deaths is 28 deaths per day, which points to stability (no variations greater than 15% compared to the data of two weeks ago).
Mayor of Santo André, Paulo Serra (PSDB) said, during a live held on Monday (23), that the recommendation is that, when registering a case of Covid-19, schools must force the use of masks for seven days. “This will prevent classes from being suspended”, he said that the protocol should be maintained during the winter, a period when, generally, flu syndromes register a high number of cases and hospitalizations.
Serra reported that the city recorded a 36% increase in cases in the last two weeks. However, Santo André has only six patients hospitalized for Covid-19 and there were no deaths in May in the city’s public hospitals.
Orlado Morando (PSDB), in front of the city hall of São Bernardo do Campo, also did a live, on the 20th, to explain the new recommendations.
“We are communicating education professionals, schools, churches that there is a recommendation for the use of the mask. Anyone who does not want to use it, know that the risk has increased”, he warned, who reported that, during the 9th to 16th of May, the city registered 414 new cases of Covid-19, a number 667% higher than the same period in the previous month.
The Secretary of Health of São Caetano do Sul said, also in a live held on Monday (23), that the city hall recommends that, during the period of high transmissibility by the cold, in which people are more often indoors. , that the masks continue in use to avoid contamination.
“The use of masks in these places is extremely important, such as transport, healthcare environments, schools, until at least the end of winter,” she said.
In the capital of São Paulo, the mandatory use of masks continues in public transport and health units. However, some private schools have been returning to the use of masks with the recent high of cases and as a way to avoid the suspension of in person.
Colégio Santa Cruz, in Alto de Pinheiros, sent a statement to those responsible on May 19, in which it reported that 63 cases of Covid-19 were recorded at the school, among educators and students.
“For this reason, the use of N95/PFF2 masks or the surgical model in the closed environments of the school remains mandatory. This measure is temporary and can be revised if the pandemic scenario changes”, the statement said.
Director Fabio Aidar explains that in the case of three positive cases in the same room, the class has face-to-face classes suspended and students return to remote teaching. This week, he estimates that about three rooms are suspended. “It’s a number that represents 5% of our classes, it’s not that expressive, but we don’t want it to get worse”, he explains.
Colégio São Francisco, located in Tatuapé, issued a statement to parents, this Tuesday (24), in which, due to the high number of cases, it recommends and encourages that the use of a mask be maintained in school environments “as well as we ask that the ( you also encourage the use”, says the note.
Colégio Pio XII, in Morumbi, has also requested, since Monday (23), that students wear masks again in the closed spaces of the school.
