Pharmaceuticals Health Meds has launched a tool that will help doctors, especially those starting out in cannabinoid medicine, in prescribing the treatment. It is a digital dosage calculator. As a herbal medicine, the cannabis it does not have a stable standard, like that of synthetically produced drugs in a laboratory. The dosage even depends on the genetics of the plant. The dosage prescription is very individual, depending on the disease, the patient and the concentration of the oil.
Of a universe of approximately 500 thousand doctors, only 0.5% are trained to treat patients with products derived from cannabis medicinal. It seems little, but taking into account that the importation of medicines of this type was only allowed in 2015 – and with a series of restrictions –, it is quite a lot.
The great incentive for doctors to begin to see the cannabis as a new possibility of treatment and specialization gained momentum after the RDC (Collegiate Board Resolution) 327 of 2019. This regulation opened the possibility for pharmaceutical companies to commercialize products based on cannabis, as long as they are approved by Anvisa (Health Surveillance Agency). This change contributed to the emergence of new medical and pharmaceutical startups and training courses.
Cannabis dosing is so delicate that even experienced doctors take months to find the most effective prescription. According to the pharmaceutical company, the tool performs a scientifically based calculation based on the patient’s condition, daily intake amount, treatment period and bottle size.
“We defend scientific support for the use of cannabis medicinal product, respecting all quality and safety standards. That’s why we developed the calculator”, says Flávio Rezende, research director at Health Meds. According to him, the tool gathers the main clinical evidence of treatment – a frequently updated database.
