The results of the laboratory tests of the National Network of Sewage Epidemiology for the epidemiological surveillance of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in urban wastewater, which operates under the coordination of EODY, were announced.
The samples come from the Attica Region and the cities of Thessaloniki, Larissa, Volos, Heraklion, Chania, Rethymnon, Agios Nikolaos Lassithi, Patras, Xanthi, Alexandroupolis, Ioannina and Corfu. The samples are taken from the entrances of the local Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWUs) and correspond to the population served by them.
Conclusions: During the week 15 to 21 November 2021, there were increasing trends, compared to the week 8 to 14 November 2021, in the average weekly viral load of SARS-CoV-2 in the urban wastewater of six of the thirteen areas (06/13) tested from the National Network of Sewage Epidemiology (EDEL) of EODY, stabilizing trends were observed in another six of the thirteen (06/13) areas of EDEL and a marginal decrease was observed in one (01/13) area of EDEL. An increase in the average weekly viral load of urban wastewater was observed in Alexandroupolis (+ 37%), Rethymno (+ 86%), Agios Nikolaos (+ 95%), Chania (+ 157%), Corfu (+ 271%) and in Heraklion (+ 433%). The viral load of urban wastewater remained stable in Xanthi (+ 1%), Thessaloniki (+ 2%), Larissa (+ 4%), Ioannina (+ 5%), Attica Region (-11%) and Volos (+ 13%).
Marginal reduction in the average weekly viral load of urban wastewater was observed in Patras (-24%).
Region of Attica: In the last week, 15-21 / 11/21, the average weekly viral load in the urban wastewater of the Attica Region showed a stabilizing trend, with a statistically insignificant change (-11%) of the weekly average compared to the previous week, 08- 14/11/21. The upward trend in the viral load of wastewater in the Attica Region started in mid-September 2021 and since then the viral load has gradually increased. The largest increase was observed in the last two weeks of October and the first week of November, while in the second (08-14 / 11/21) and third (15-21 / 11/21) week of November the viral load of sewage showed stabilizing trends.
Thessaloniki: Last week, 15-21 / 11/21, in Thessaloniki, the weekly average value of the viral load of urban wastewater remained stable (+ 2%) compared to the previous week, 08-14 / 11/21, for the first time after a month of continuous growth. However, the weekly average value of the viral load, from mid-September until today, has increased by 770%, with the result that the viral load of urban wastewater in the city of Thessaloniki is at very high levels.
Larissa: In the last week, 15-21 / 11/21, the average weekly viral load of urban wastewater in Larissa remained stable (+ 4%) compared to the week 08-14 / 11/21. Viral load levels remain particularly high. 8 Volos: In the last week, 15-21 / 11/21, the average weekly viral load of urban wastewater in Volos remained virtually stable (+ 13%) compared to the week 08-14 / 11/21. Viral load levels remain particularly high.
Heraklion: In the last week, 15-21 / 11/21, in the city of Heraklion, the weekly average value of the viral load of urban wastewater showed a jump (+ 433%) compared to the previous week, 08-14 / 11/21. Viral load levels are characterized by high.
Chania: In the last week, 15-21 / 11/21, in the city of Chania, the weekly average value of the viral load of urban wastewater showed a significant increase (+ 157%) compared to the previous week, 08-14 / 11/21. Viral load levels are characterized by high.
Rethimno: In the last week, 15-21 / 11/21, in the city of Rethymno, the average viral load of sewage increased (+ 86%) compared to the week 01-07 / 11/21. Viral load levels are characterized by high. It is noted that last week, 08-14 / 11/21, no samples of urban wastewater were checked from the city of Rethymnon due to technical problems.
Saint Nicholas: In the last week, 15-21 / 11/21, in the city of Agios Nikolaos, the weekly average value of the viral load of urban wastewater showed an increase (+ 95%) compared to the last week, 08-14 / 11/21. Viral load levels are characterized by high.
Patras: In the last week, 15-21 / 11/21, in Patras, the average weekly viral load of urban wastewater showed a marginal decrease (-24%) compared to the previous week, 08-14 / 11/21.
Blonde: In the last week, 15-21 / 11/21, in Xanthi, the average weekly viral load of urban wastewater remained stable (+ 1%) compared to the week 08-14 / 11/21. Viral load levels remain particularly high.
Alexandroupoli: In the last week, 15-21 / 11/21, in Alexandroupolis, there was an increase (+ 37%) in the average weekly viral load of urban wastewater compared to the week 08-14 / 11/21. Viral load levels remain particularly high.
Janina: In the last week, 15-21 / 11/21, in Ioannina, the average weekly viral load of urban wastewater remained virtually stable (+ 5%) compared to the previous week, 08-14 / 11/21.
Corfu: In the last week, 15-21 / 11/21, in the city of Corfu, the average weekly viral load of urban wastewater showed a significant increase (+ 271%) compared to the previous week, 08-14 / 11/21.
