Following the announcement of an increase in cases of acute hepatitis of unknown etiology in the United Kingdom, 650 similar cases have been reported in 33 countries around the world. In recent weeks there has been a steady decline in incidents internationally.
In our country, during the last fifteen days, four new cases of children have been identified, which meet the criteria of the “possible case” of acute hepatitis of unknown etiology, according to the definition of the World Health Organization.
The first concerns a 4.5 year old child who developed jaundice without other concomitant symptoms and laboratory tests revealed elevated transaminases> 500 IU / ml, with no evidence of infection or other cause justifying this increase. The child is being treated, his clinical and laboratory picture is improving without having fully recovered and his general condition is good.
The others three children aged 12, 6 and 5.5 years showed gastrointestinal symptoms, and an increase in transaminases, which was found after a laboratory test. All the children were treated, improved and discharged from the hospital in excellent condition.
Overall, the “possible cases” of acute hepatitis of unknown etiology in children in our country until today amount to nine (9).
