by

São Paulo confirmed, this Wednesday (8), the first case of monkeypox in the country. This is a 41-year-old man who recently traveled to Spain.

The patient is in isolation at the Emílio Ribas hospital, in the west of the capital. His health status was not detailed. The information was first published by Globo and confirmed by Sheet.

The prefecture is still investigating the possibility of another person being infected in the city. In this case, it is a 26-year-old woman who, according to a preliminary investigation, has no recent travel history. She also had no known contact with other infected people.

wanted by Sheet after the disclosure of the first confirmed case, the Municipal Health Secretary of São Paulo and the Ministry of Health have not yet made a statement until the publication of this text.

The woman’s health status is stable. She is hospitalized in isolation at a public hospital in the city, according to Covisa (Health Surveillance Coordination) of the Municipal Health Department.

Across the country, there are at least seven suspected cases under investigation, according to a note from the Ministry of Health released on Monday (6). These are people who live in Santa Catarina, Ceará, Mato Grosso do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, Rondônia and São Paulo.

The federal government created a situation room to monitor the progress of the disease.

Monkeypox is part of the smallpox family of viruses, but is typically a much milder condition, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The most common symptoms appear within six to 13 days after exposure, but can take up to three weeks. People who get sick often have a fever, headache, back and muscle pain, swollen lymph nodes, and general exhaustion.

About one to three days after the fever, most people also develop a painful rash characteristic of poxviruses. It starts with flat red marks that become raised and filled with pus over the course of five to seven days. The rash can start on the patient’s face, hands, feet, inside the mouth or on Organs genitals and progress to the rest of the body.
