A second case of smallpox in monkeys was detected in our country. According to EODY, today at the Central Laboratory of Public Health, a sample of a patient with a clinical picture compatible with monkey pox was performed for non-variola orthopox virus species, which also includes the monkey pox virus and was positive.
This is the second imported case of the disease in our country and concerns a 47-year-old patient with a recent trip to Spain.
Genetic material will be sent to the Microbiology laboratory of the Medical School of AUTh for the identification of the non Variola ORTHOPOX species and the further phylogenetic analysis.
The patient is hospitalized in isolation, in a stable condition.
According to the epidemiological data available so far, the risk for the general population is still low, as the disease is usually mild and self-limiting and the disease is characterized by relatively low transmissibility, according to EODY.
It is worth noting that so far no case of the disease with domestic transmission has been found in our country.
From now on, updates on monkey pox cases in the country will be provided on a weekly basis, every Thursday.
