With an increase in Covid cases, SP city hall opens beds for respiratory syndromes

by

Amid the growth in Covid-19 cases, the City of São Paulo announced this Monday (13) that 50 new beds will be made available to treat patients with the disease or severe acute respiratory syndrome.

Of this total, 40 are in the ward and 10 are in ICUs.

According to data from the Covid-19 Panel of the Municipal Health Department (SMS), municipal hospitals have an occupancy rate of 73% for ICU beds and 63% for wards. As of June 1, the two rates were respectively at 53% and 38%.

At Hospital Municipal Brasilândia, in the north zone of São Paulo, the secretary reported that the occupancy rate of ICU beds for Covid-19 is at 84%. At the Professora Lydia Storópoli Municipal Hospital, in the central region, this figure is 86%.

The cases of Srag (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) caused by Covid-19 recorded an increase in the capital of São Paulo. According to data from the Covid-19 Panel, during the month of April, the daily moving average was approximately ten cases of the syndrome associated with the disease.

In mid-May, that number rose gradually, reaching 55 cases at the end of the month. In the first days of June, a successive fall in the moving average was recorded, reaching approximately 23 cases last Friday (10).

The recorded Covid cases in the city also follow a similar pattern. For much of April, the daily moving average of new diagnoses hovered around 300. In late April and throughout May, that number gradually increased.

At the beginning of June, the figure was already more than 2,000 daily cases. However, a small drop has been observed in the last few days – like last Saturday (11) with 1,671 moving average.

The increase in Covid cases and the demand for medical care was already felt in private hospitals. For example, Hospital Nipo-Brasileiro had an average of 60 visits to the respiratory emergency department during the month of April. On May 30th, that number jumped to 400.

The hospital even needed to resume the structure for Covid cases used in the most critical moments of the pandemic, which in recent months had been adapted to serve patients with other diseases.

A similar decision was taken by Hospital Sírio-Libanês. The rise in demand in the emergency room amid the increase in Covid cases meant that areas for respiratory syndromes that had already been closed in March were reopened.

In early May, the average daily attendance was 300, but they jumped to around 420 by the end of that month.

The increase in the number of Covid cases is already felt nationally. Last Tuesday (7), Brazil registered 80,603, the highest number since February 25. On this date, the moving average of cases compared to the previous two weeks had a growth of 144%.

Fiocruz’s infogripe bulletin has already pointed out a trend in the increase of srag cases. The latest edition of the document, published last Thursday (9), estimated about 7,700 cases of the syndrome in the week of May 29 to June 4. The week before, that estimate was 7,200.

According to the institution, in the last four weeks, 69% of Srag cases tested positive for Covid-19.
