The Minas Gerais State Health Department is investigating the first two suspected cases of monkeypox in the state. The notifications are from Uberlândia and Ituiutaba, both cities in the Triângulo Mineiro. The patient from Uberlândia died.
The disease is caused by monkeypox, a virus of the genus orthopoxvirus. In the same family is the smallpox virus. Contagion occurs via contact with infected animals. It is possible for rodents to “bridge” with humans.
Symptoms of the disease are fever, headache, swollen lymph nodes and exhaustion.
The first suspected case in Minas Gerais was notified by the Uberlândia City Hall on June 11. The second, by the municipality of Ituiutaba on the 12th.
In both cases there is no history of displacements or trips abroad. The secretariat said it would not pass on more data on the two suspected cases to preserve the privacy and individuality of patients.
Until last Wednesday (8), at least eight suspected cases of monkeypox were under investigation in the country. The cases were residents of São Paulo, Santa Catarina, Ceará, Mato Grosso do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul and Rondônia.
In São Paulo there are two confirmed cases of the disease. Both are considered imported, as both patients have a recent travel history to European countries.
