Smallpox of Monkeys – EODY Announcement: The vaccine at the end of June

by

Procurement of vaccine doses in the Member States will begin by the end of this month and priority will be given to countries with the greatest need

Through the Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA), the EU entered into a contract with Bavarian Nordic to purchase 109,090 doses of the 3rd generation vaccine in response to the ongoing monkeypox epidemic. The supply of the Member States will start by the end of this month and priority will be given to the countries with the greatest needs.

Approximately 1,500 confirmed cases of smallpox have been identified in 25 European countries, accounting for approximately 85% of all diagnoses worldwide.

The European Union is using for the first time funds through the EU4Health program for the direct purchase of vaccines and the supply of its Member States.

This vaccine is approved for smallpox in Europe, but is just as effective for monkeypox.

The EU’s response to this monkey pox epidemic proves that with concerted action EU Member States can achieve much better results.
